As jewellery designers, we are often inspired by history—by vintage looks and traditions. Sapphires have been mined in Montana for over a century and have long had a reputation for the best colour and quality in North America. Excited by the striking blue and size of this Montana sapphire, we decided to give it an antique-style pendant setting with an MLJ twist. The key to the style is the milgrained white gold, which refers to the meticulously created (by hand) tiny beads across the metal. The milgrain gives a beautiful vintage feel and softens the diamond-shaped setting in which the round sapphire sits. The beaded surface scintillates as the light plays on it, as if it is covered with miniscule diamonds, adding great sparkle and interest to the piece. This unique pillow pendant would suit a lover of antique or vintage styles and complete a casual or more formal outfit. Best of all, its fine detail and blueness would tie in superbly with an intricately finished bridal dress.
