As jewellery designers, we know when we find an extraordinary gemstone—in size, colour, and cut—the rest of the jewellery piece has to be designed to serve it. This bi-colour, emerald-cut sapphire from Sri Lanka is one of those remarkable jewels, and we knew that with the right setting this stone would sing! In the geological history of the gem’s creation, it changed from a greenish~yellow to deep blue sapphire and the interior of the stone holds these beautiful transitions, which make it unique. Every aspect of the ring’s design was thought through to maximize the impact of the stone. White gold was the clear choice of metal. It works as an almost neutral background to the shades and nuances of the stone. The presentation of the stone was kept deliberately simple, although the shank has a slight bevel to echo the emerald cut. The most radical choice was the stone’s orientation. Traditionally, a stone is set to run lengthwise down the finger, however we saw that a horizontal arrangement was superior—it made the mesmerizing internal colour shifts much more visible to the wearer. The design is strong, simple, minimalist, but the stone is the star. Sapphires are second only to diamonds in popularity for engagement rings and this unique stone would be ideal for a unique marriage proposal. Equally, it could mark an important anniversary, September birthday or be a sensational everyday ring. In the end, whoever puts this ring on her finger will get a lifetime of joy from it.
